Personal Bio
My name is RJ. A native desert dweller, I grew up
in a military household as my parents were enlisted in the Army. When I became
an adult, I enlisted as well so that I could serve my country yet continue my education.
I recently returned to college full time after serving in a full time for a couple years. I hope to be an example which encourages other
veterans with a passion for STEM to pursue research opportunities.
I have been in love with the sciences since I was
a little girl. I was lucky enough to have parents who supported and encouraged
my siblings and I to learn more about the universe. I have a very wide array of
academic interests, but I'm most passionate about electrons, metals, crystals, and nanotechnology. If its diameter is referenced in nanometers, it makes my heart flutter! My slightly less nerdy interests include video games, hiking with my dog, and drinking hipster beers with my friends.
I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity to explore my passions and I couldn't be more excited to conduct a research project for the first time. This is my first (and final) semester as an S- STEM research intern because I'm about to graduate with my Associate of Science focused in Chemistry and Mathematics. In conjunction with the S-STEM program I will also be taking my college's nanotechnology class which will allow me to frequently use a Scanning Electron Microscope and Atomic Force Microscope. After this semester, I will be transferring to my local state university and complete my B.S. in Chemistry with a minor in Physics. From there, I would like to study Material Engineering for my Masters. I have a passion for serving my community and country, and I hope to continue my career serving those around me. After I finish my education, I aspire to work with an agency of my choosing, where I can help advance our nation and the next generation of scientists.
