[Week 6]: Maps and Mistakes

I apologize for the short post, but I have a major test tomorrow and midterms next week, so I've been extremely busy.

This week I was continuing to familiarize myself with ArcGIS. Its a pretty complex system and there is an online option as well. Its a bit frustrating to download but I definitely suggest it for its functionality. While Google Earth is useful, ArcGIS provides a million more options and a high level of customization and sharing.

For example, here is a map of Portland, OR where the buildings are color coded via their use. This would be useful for a company that was perhaps looking for a lot where their building would receive high foot traffic and wouldn't have competition immediately nearby. Its so specific, I can view it at specific times of day such as 10:43 AM.

I can also view all the local bus stops in the Tempe, AZ area and plot distances between them, or from specific places.

These were all utilizing just the online program. For more  STEM related purposes I could select a topography graph, I can add layers for amounts of rainfall, temperature at a times of day, the options are endless!!

Other than familiarizing with ArcGIS, I had a sit down with mentor Josh as I wasn't sure about this ASU symposium I was tasked with applying for. Since I am still under S-STEM rather than TRAIN, and I am not working in the Biosciences lab its pretty hard to stay on top of things and stay connected with everyone. I definitely had the wrong idea regarding what this opportunity was about and hadn't mentioned it to my adviser prior to today. This seemed to upset her and I felt horrible and I misunderstood and mismanaged the situation. Its one thing to do research, its another to try and bridge the gap between my program requirements and what I am actually tasked with doing if they don't directly coincide. At the end of the day, this is all a learning experience and I'm trying hard to just take it one step at a time.

Wish me luck on my exams and I'll see you later, Space Cowboy.

Sincerely,

RJ
